Welcome to our website in what is our thirteenth year of running The Old Withy Garden Nursery. As I write this, the weather is still very unsettled but we have lost the prolonged period of frosty nights, which were unusual, but not unknown, for this part of Cornwall. Although we have again lost plants due to the cold weather, these losses are nowhere near as great as the previous winter.
One of our two poly tunnels is full of new potting, including a large range of rock plants and herbs, which are coming out for sale now, as they root around their pots and are established enough to withstand the wet weather that we are getting at the moment. Plants coming out of these tunnels have had frosts on them even under the polythene, so are perfectly hardy to plant out now. We also have a range of perennial Wallflowers (Erysimum) which will be available over the next couple of weeks. These plants flower for months and are very reliable in exposed gardens.
As a nursery specialising in herbaceous perennials, most of the plants that we offer are perfectly hardy and are overwintered outside, ready to grow away in the spring and give years of pleasure in your gardens. This year, we have good stocks of Kniphofia (Red Hot Pokers) in a variety of colours from pale yellow, through to bright orange and our usual range of Hemerocallis (Day Lillies), as well as countless other tried and tested varieties.
We have just propagated a new Aster which we found in our grounds as a seedling. It is very compact, about 60cm high and has grey blue flowers with a dark centre on bushy growth with healthy dark green leaves. We have decided to call this Michaelmas Daisy 'Cornish Clouds' and it joins our two Achilleas 'Cornish Sunrise' and 'Cornish Sunset' and our hardy Cranesbill 'Cornish Candy' as plants that are only available from our nursery. Stocks always sell very fast, so you may have to be patient!
Spring flowering bulbs in pots are selling fast and are ideal to plant into your gardens or containers now to provide early colour.
Our thirteenth catalogue is available to download from this site and will be updated through the season as more plants are available for sale. The catalogue includes information on the plants that we grow as well as pages to give ideas for certain situations and uses.
As well as a large range of herbaceous perennials for sale, The Old Withy Garden Nursery has a number of demonstration borders, where customers can see a selection of our plants growing, giving a better idea of their size and habit. Gardens are never finished and we hope to replant more areas of the borders this year, when we are not busy potting and propagating plants for sale.
The Old Withy Garden Nursery isopen seven days a week from Monday 1st February. Our opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.00pm and Sundays 10.00am to 4pm. Why not make the journey to come and see us soon?
